Event Title: Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani’s Message on International Mother Language Day

Event Date: 2026-02-21

Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, in his message on International Mother Language Day, emphasized that a mother language forms the very foundation of a person’s identity, dignity, and cultural heritage. He stated that it not only defines who we are but also reflects our traditions, values, and rich cultural legacy.

He noted that research has consistently shown that children who begin their education in their mother tongue experience more balanced and effective cognitive development. A mother language, he remarked, is a child’s first voice and the custodian of inherited knowledge and traditions, playing a fundamental role in shaping personality and intellectual growth.

The Chairman Senate observed that Pakistan is a vibrant mosaic of languages. Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto, Balochi, Saraiki, Brahui, Hindko, Hazarvi, and many other languages spoken across the country represent the nation’s shared culture, history, traditional bonds, and historical narratives. He highlighted that Urdu continues to serve as a vital link language connecting the federating units; however, all languages spoken in Pakistan deserve equal respect and pride.

Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani further stated that Pakistan’s mother languages have produced countless distinguished poets and writers whose literary contributions have earned national and international recognition. These languages are a priceless heritage passed down by our ancestors, and their preservation, promotion, and development are a collective responsibility.

He reaffirmed the commitment to undertaking coordinated and meaningful measures to safeguard and promote mother languages, ensuring that future generations remain strongly connected to their cultural roots while further strengthening national cohesion and unity.
