Message of the Chairperson
Library Committee

It is a matter of great pleasure for me to see the launch of the Senate Library Web Face at the dawn of 2010. This publication was long overdue but as the saying goes "better late than never"

The Senate was created for the first time under the 1973 Constitution which was a gift of Shaheed Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.

Introduction: The library of National Assembly was shared by the members of the Senate till the establishment of an independent Library for the Senate in 1986 in response to the increased needs, requirements of the Senators.

Library's mission is to serve the users by providing them with quality resources, services and gateways to information. To fulfill this mission, the Library is committed to:

•  understand the needs of its users;
•  build collections;
•  provide access to and promote the discovery and use of national and international information resources;
•  ensure the preservation and long-lasting availability of Library collections and resources;
•  create hospitable physical and virtual environments for study;
•  collaborate with other legislative libraries to enrich the research and learning;
•  develop, encourage, and sustain expertise, skill, commitment and an innovative spirit in its staff.

Library's vision is to make it a center of intense intellectual inquiry. It provides study space, networked PCs, books, reference material, periodicals and journals to support the legislative business of the senate and to facilitate the research. Information is available in many formats besides books e.g. videos, CD ROMs, maps. Electronic resources can also be accessed from any networked PC. Photocopier, printers and scanners are also available.

It stocks more than 12,000 books and subscribes periodicals covering different areas like law, constitution, parliamentary practices, legislation, economics, politics, international affairs, philosophy, history etc. Leading national and international daily newspapers are being subscribed and their records are maintained.
