Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Raja Zafar ul Haq has, in a meeting with Ambassador of the European Union Mrs. Androulla Kaminara, said that European Union has always stood up for human rights and Pakistan expects from the European Union to express its observations on the grave human rights violations being committee in Indian Occupied Kashmir which have now also spread to Delhi as well as East of India.
Raja Zafar ul Haq said that despite the unflinching commitment to human rights EU has not expressed a clear stance on the state sponsored killings, burning of houses, raids in Kashmir which continue to happen daily. The Ambassador said that although there has been no statement, the situation is in knowledge of EU and is being monitored. She also said that she will send Pakistan’s concerns in her report to authorities.
The issues of death penalty, freedom of media, human rights, working of international NGOs were also discussed. Leader of the Opposition told the ambassador that invoking death penalty is not just a provision of constitution but an article of faith for the heinous crimes committed and in light of the situation that had emerged in face of growing terrorism it was the need of the time. He said that whenever any issue of curbs on media freedom surfaces, the opposition always supports the cause of journalists and press and stands up with them.
Both sides agreed that there is a need to further enhance the relationship between Pakistan and European Union and practical steps need to be taken for the commitments made on different levels.
