The Senate Functional Committee on Devolution held its meeting on 08th January, 2020, at Parliament House, under Chairmanship of Senator Moula Bux Chandio. The Committee discussed compliance to its directions from previous meeting as well as the matters relating to Laakhra Coal Mines and closure of PMDC project in Sindh, causing unemployment of 4000 employees.
Chaired by Senator Moula Bux Chandio, the meeting was attended by Senators Shamim Afridi, Prof. Dr. Mehr Taj Roghani, Mirza Muhammad Afridi, Muhammad Ayub and Mushtaq Ahmed Khan. The senior officers from concerned ministries and departments, including Special Secretary IPC, Joint Secretary Cabinet Division, MD – PTDC and Secretary WWF Chairman WWB also attended the meeting.
The meeting commenced with a briefing on the status of compliance to the directions and decisions from the previous meeting. The Committee directed the Workers’ welfare board to accommodate the genuine cases, that fulfil basic criteria and qualification and age factor may be relaxed. It was, however, desired that employees with lower qualification or fake degrees should not be accommodated/ regularized.
Representatives from Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation presented the details of the project and its case for extension of the same by the Provincial Government of Sindh. The Committee decided to invite the government functionaries from the Province to hear the views from both sides, prior to making any recommendations or decision in the matter.
With reference to the matter of implementation on the decisions of the Committee on the matter of PTDC land measuring 172 acres, the Committee decided to present a special report to the House with a request to refer the report to the Implementation Committee for intervention.
