The Senate Standing Committee on Aviation in its meeting on Tuesday discussed in detail issues pertaining to Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) employees who had recently been dismissed from Service by PIA Management. A Call Attention Notice moved by Senator Sherry Rehman regarding the violation of basic human rights and Industrial Relations Act, 2012 by imposing a ban on Union activities was also taken up in the meeting today.
While taking up of the case of PIA employees, the Committee stressed the need for leniency. However, it recommended that any action taken must be within the ambit of law.
Considering the Call Attention Notice, regarding the violation of basic human rights and Industrial Relations Act, 2012by imposing a ban on Union activities through the Essential Service Act of 1952, as referred by the House on 7 March, 2019. The Committee was of the view that despite PIA making progress under the Air Force, CBA Unions are an essential part of healthy organizations worldwide and must be reinstated. Also pay PIA employees pay scales must be in parity with the pay packages of other airline. The Calling Attention Notice was dismissed.
The meeting was presided over by Senator Mushahidullah Khan. Members present were Senator Sherry Rehman, Senator Syed Muzafar Hussain Shah, Senator Shaheen Khalid Butt, Senator Faisal Javed , Senator Manzoor Ahmed Kakar, Senator Nauman Wazir Khattak and senior officers from the Ministry of Aviation and Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).
