Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights in its meeting on Tuesday was told that the central culprit of the incident of teenage girl being forced to walk naked in Dera Khan Ismail (DIK) village is still out of custody. The Committee has directed RPO DIK to give periodic progress report on the arrest of the culprit and has also asked the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa social welfare department to do as much as it can for counseling of the affected girl Shareefan Bibi.

The meeting was held under the Chairmanship of Senator Nasreen Jalil here in Islamabad and was attended among others by Senators Farhatullah Babar, Samina Saeed, Sitara Ayaz, Mufti Abdul Sattar, Seher Kamran among others.

Regarding report about a girl set on fire in Mandi Bahauddin, the Committee was told by RPO Gujranwala that police has recorded the dying declaration of the victim girl and based on that the central culprit Tasawur Inayat, brother of Shazia Inayat in whose house the victim Rizwana used to go to learn stitching has already been arrested and is on physical remand till 11 December. The Committee appreciated the work of police department and asked them to give progress reports on the matter as anything happens.

The Committee after hearing the petitioner and Chief Secretary AJ&K on the matter of public petition of Ms. Maria Tahir referred the matter to President AJ&K. Chairperson committee also decided to discuss the matter with the Chairman Senate before any further consideration.

Regarding a public petition of Roshni Helpline to treat the cases of missing children as a cognizable offence in Pakistan, the Committee asked the petitioners to come up with a comparative analysis on legislation in this regard and recommend what kind of legislation they suggest for the same.
