SENATE LIBRARY

The library of the Senate was established by the purchasing seventeen books in 1973 soon after the adoption of Constitution of Pakistan in April, 1973.

Library's mission is to serve the users by providing them with quality resources, services and gateways to information. To fulfil this mission, the Library is committed to:

  • Understand the needs of its users;
  • Build collections;
  • Provide access to and promote the discovery and use of national and international information resources;
  • Ensure the preservation and long-lasting availability of library collections and resources;
  • Create hospitable physical and virtual environments for study;
  • Collaborate with other legislative libraries to enrich the research and learning;
  • Develop, encourage, and sustain expertise, skill, commitment and an innovative spirit in its staff.

Library's vision is to make it a center of intense intellectual inquiry. It provides study space, networked PCs, books, reference material, periodicals and journals to support the legislative business of the senate and to facilitate research. Information is available in many formats besides books e.g. videos, CD ROMs and maps. Electronic resources can also be accessed from any networked PC. Photocopier, printers and scanners are also available.

It stocks more than 20,000 books and subscribes periodicals covering different areas like law, constitution, parliamentary practices, legislation, economics, politics, international affairs, philosophy, history etc. Leading national daily newspapers are remove subscribed and their records are maintained.


LIBRARY IN BRIEF

Senate library is heading to achieve higher standards by automation and digitization. Information housed in this library is accessible from anywhere through Online Public Access Catalogue (Web OPAC). The Library continues to embrace change and align itself to thrive on diversity, support professional growth and opportunity, and reward flexibility and innovation. Library Committee (comprising of six Senators) holds meetings frequently to improve day to day library work.

Physical Resources

Total Book Collection is 20,000 plus (Main strength is Law and political Science). Members are also facilitated by subscribing different periodicals newspapers and leading law journals i.e. Pakistan Legal Decisions (PLD), Pakistan Law journal (PLJ) Supreme Court Monthly Review (SCMR), Pakistan Criminal Law Journal (PCrLJ), Pakistan Tax Decision (PTD), Tribunal Digest (TD), Pakistan Labour Cases (PLC) and Civil Law Cases (CLC) etc.

For quick citation, library has produced a document "Alphabetical Catalogue of Laws of Pakistan 1836 to 2014", under the guidance and supervision of Senator Muhammad Anwar Bhinder.
