Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)

The Inter-Parliamentary Union is the biggest parliamentary organization in the world with 154 members and 7 associate members. It is considered to be a focal point for world-wide parliamentary discussions and also for nurturing healthy traditions in representative democracies. The Senate became a member of IPU in 1973, immediately after adoption of bicameral system of democracy in the country, and since then delegations from Senate have been actively participating in IPU conferences and other meetings.

Senate delegations have been repeatedly urging this forum to accept the responsibility of creating an atmosphere of peace in conflict-ridden regions of the world like Afghanistan, the Middle East and Kashmir since IPU represents all races, colours and creeds. Active participation by Senate delegations led to achieving foreign policy objectives. (visit IPU website)
