He is an advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan where he pleaded Constitutional and complex cases. He has been a member of the Punjab Bar Council as well as that of the Pakistan Bar Council.

Mr. Aitzaz Ahsan has been in the Provincial Cabinet as Minister for Information, Planning and Development, Culture and Tourism Government of the Punjab from 1976 to 1977.

Mr. Aitzaz Ahsan is known for his eloquence and speechcraft and his speeches are studded with quotable quotes from great scholars and intellectuals of the past. He is a well read person whose discourses are always reflective of his diversified reading, experiences in law, jurisprudence and politics, knowledge of human psychology, history and culture and a gifted intellect.

He was elected as a member of the Senate of Pakistan in March 1994 for a six-year term. He is member of the Senate Standing Committees on Foreign Affairs, Kshmir Affiars and Northern Affairs and also on Functional Committee on Human Rights.

In 1970 Mr. Aitzaz Ahsan stood first in the Central Superior Services Examination in United Pakistan and was offered induction in the then C.S.P. Cadre. He refused the offer to continue his practice at the Bar.

He was elected as a Member of the National Assembly in 1988 and held the portfolio of the Ministries of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Interior and Narcotics Control as a member of the Federal Cabinet. He was entrusted with the charge of the Ministry of Education as a Federal Minister in the Caretaker Government in 1993.
